Services

Heritage Veterinary Hospital (HVH) is a primary health care veterinary clinic where we focus on both comprehensive and preventive health care for dogs, cats, rats, rabbits and guinea pigs.

Here at HVH we offer the services below:

  • Comprehensive Physical Examinations This examination would be defined as a complete nose-to-toes checkup. Our medical team will gain a full medical history as well as up to date weight on your fur-baby. One of our knowledgeable veterinarians will then exam nose, skin, eyes, ears, nose, mouth (this includes gums, tongue & teeth), heart, lungs, lymph nodes, abdomen, joints and all the working parts in-between. Here at HVH our staff strive to maintain calm environment for your fur family member, and work with low-stress handling techniques.

  • Behavioural Consultations Behavioural consultations require a detailed discussion with one of our veterinarians about your pet’s behavioural concerns. Due to an animal’s inability to communicate with words, this may also entail a comprehensive physical examination to ensure pain or medical issues aren’t the underlying cause for the specific behaviour of concern.

  • Nutritional Consultations and Calculation – This is an appointment that occurs with one of our knowledgeable Registered Veterinary Technician. A weight, a body condition score, a muscle condition score and consideration of medical concerns are all considered when making diet recommendations, diet changes, or nutritional plans.

  • Neurological Consultations – This examination include a comprehensive physical examination with added focus on the neurological system (brain, spinal chord and extremities).

  • Annual Examination and Vaccinations According to the Ontario Veterinary College, a valid veterinary client patient relationship requires a veterinarian to complete a physical examination on an annual basis. This comprehensive physical exam typically aligns well with both core vaccinations and vaccinations required based on lifestyle.

  • Pharmacy Here at HVH we do not believe that “one size fits all”, and therefore all treatment plans are individualized to your pet’s needs and preferences. Our in-house pharmacy provides both short and long-term medications, parasite treatment and preventatives to ensure your family member is protected and treated appropriately. We also have access to compounding pharmacies for more specialized/specific medication needs.

  • Medical Diagnostics (including but not limited to):

    • Blood Work – Blood work is used to establish a healthy baseline and used to diagnose illness and monitor disease. Here at HVH we have the capability of obtaining blood results in house in the case of emergency as well as access to IDEXX Laboratories for specialized testing.

    • Urinalysis – Using a chemical litmus test as well as centrifugation and microscopy is a primary means of checking bladder and kidney health.

    • Radiology – Commonly known as X-rays! It is a pain-free way of getting an overall landscape image of specific areas of the body.

    • Cytology – A type of diagnostic tool that examines cells and infectious agents (bacteria, yeast, fungus, parasites) under a microscope.

    • Histology – A type of diagnostic tool that examines the architecture of tissue under a microscope. This type of tool is commonly used when characterizes different types of masses, and is integral in the diagnosis of cancerous vs. benign masses.

    • Specialized Diagnostic Tests – Available through IDEXX, an external reference laboratory for hundreds of different conditions.

  • Medical Surgical Procedures & Elective Surgical Procedures (such as):

    • Spay (ovariohysterectomy) – Prevents unwanted pregnancy, uterine infections and reduces the risk of certain cancers.

    • Neuter – Helps prevent testicular cancer, some prostate infections, and some less desirable hormonally driven behaviours.

    • Dental Cleaning & Surgery – Treatment and prevention of periodontal disease which causes bad breath, painful chewing, abscesses and tooth decay/loss. Bacteria under the gums can lead to more severe medical problems in the heart, liver and kidneys. Total comprehensive assessment of the oral cavity.

    • Mass Removal – Removal of masses and tumors. Masses may be benign or malignant (cancerous).

    • Cystotomy – The removal of painful bladder stones or biopsies of the urinary bladder.

    • Enterotomy – Non-elective abdominal surgeries for problems like foreign body removal and biopsies.
